Weekly Newsletter 14 - 19 April 2015

On Saturday the Northern Cape Senior Golf Team returned from the 2015 IPT with a sense of triumph.  The tournament, hosted by the Benoni Country Club, included four days of morning foursomes and four days of afternoon singles. Ultimately the team finished second on the log behind Eastern Province, the 2015 winners.
While on Sunday 18 players from the Northern Cape Society for Senior Golfers prepare to travel to the 76th National Championships hosted by Bloemfontein and Schoeman Park Golf Clubs.  Played over five days some 236 players representing seven provincial societies participate. The final two days are set aside for the championships proper. Former Griqualand West hockey player, Alistair Forbes, a winner on five occasions, is the defending champion.

Closer to home Sunday’s Sealing Solutions League outing saw the Happy Hookers and CPac claim the top points in the A League while the results were reasonably evenly matched in the B League.

Deon Kruis dominated the April Rhodes Medal on Saturday. Playing off scratch a five under par gross 67 and a corresponding net saw him claim the best net overall along with the best gross on the day. AJ du Randt posted a net 68 to claim the A division, with Stephan Le Roux the runner up on net 71. Dave Wilson was the winner in the B division on a net 72 in count out from runner up Attie van Niekerk.

In the Senior Society outing Saturday Cedric van der Ross and Dave Wilson returned a winning 44 betterball points. Hannes Le Roux and Theo Fourie were second on 43 points with Ant and Wedge Crozier third on 42 points.

Also on Saturday Susan Ferreira managed a clean sweep in the Ladies Medal and Putting competition.

Team Parks Mashaboa and Andries Kori returned 50 points to edge out the field of 108 players in Friday’s annual NOCCI Golf Day. The format was betterball stableford played from a scramble drive. Francois Schwartz and Christaricco Gordon were the runners up, just one point behind. Neil Steyn and Willie Uys were third on 47 points in a count out.

Willie Delport took the count out from Gavin Schafer on 38 points to win the Darsha Insurance IPS on Wednesday. Kevin Collings was third on 36 points.

This week the KGC presents the Konica Minolta Business League Wednesday, the KWV Niner and the Spur Junior Challenge on Thursday and a Flamingo Casino Meat and Slots Niner along with the CTCS snowball draw on Friday. The Golf Shop host Saturday’s event with the promise of a memorable day for all.

Weekly Newsletter 6 - 12 April 2015

On Sunday afternoon Rashid Boughan posted 41 individual stableford points to win the Jesse Salo Golf Fundraiser in support of his hockey trip to Australia.
Francois Schwartz was second on 40 points in a count out from third placed Brenton Marthinus. Three players followed on 39 points - Kariem Anderson, Allen Meyer and Conrad Fortune.  
Despite the current testing course conditions Andries Kori underlined the reason for his provincial team selection when he carded a three under par gross 69 on Saturday. His 39 individual stableford points along with a favourable count out saw him win the day. An also in form Tinus Venter was second after losing that that count out. Oppel Myburg, who returned 38 points, was third on a count out from the final prize winner Pierre Fourie.
In a Mellins i Style matchplay championships, by handcap, Tinus and Hermus Venter scraped in with a birdie on the 18th to knockout Yusuf  Kana and Wade King on the final hole.
In the individual matchplay championships, also by handicap, Adrian McLaren beat Fuad Mahri and Kariem Anderson beat Johan Herselman.
Friday’s IPS invitational tournament, the Mecedes Benz Trophy, as professionally presented as ever, saw Keith Brown (39), Kumar Anoop (42) and Parks Mashaboa (39) the respective division qualifiers for the regional finals in Mauritius. Neil Steyn (41), by virtue of his 2014 win, was credit as second in the A division with Tinuis Venter (39) third. Cedric van der Ross (41) and Gavin Schafer (41) were second and third in the B division. Gary Hepburne (37) and Tony Datnow (34) were second and third in the C division.
Nico Ross (20), Donald Whitebooi (19) and Braam Botes (17) were the first to third respectively in Thursday’s KWV Niner.
Gavin van Zyl returned to old form Wednesday when he carded a gross 77 for 41 points and a win the monthly Leons House of Liquor IPS. Wikus Kok was second on 39 points with Christo Botma third on 38 points.
This week the Club offers the Darsha IPS Wednsday and the Spur Junior Challenge along with the KWV Niner on Thursday. On Friday the course will be closed to the annual NOCCI golf day, another of the KGC’s major corporate occasions. On Saturday it is the Rhodes Medal and the Seniors outing. On Sunday it is the Sealing Solutions League, the format Pinehurst.

Weekly Newsletter 1 - 4 April 2015

The majority of Saturday’s golfers received more than one good soaking on the day. Eddie Barkhuizen and Willie Gerber, first off, first in and around the course in three and a half hours, were only required to vacate the front patio. Their 46 betterball stableford points remained the leading score throughout the competition. Susan Ferreira and Charles Malherbe, next in, but, recipients of the first shower, were the runners up on 45 points. Keanan Aysen and Shane Boughan were third on 44 points. For the day the total registered golfers 99, the total registered rain 8 mm.

Henk Visser carded a gross 35 for 20 points and an outright win in Friday’s Flamingo Casino Meat and Slots Niner. Stiaan Hugo, who carded a level par 36, was second on 19 points on a count out from third placed Luchmen Poonawassy. Adrian McLaren was fourth on 18 points in a count out from Andries Kori, the latter also carded a level par gross 36.

Mali Manana returned 18 points for a clear win in the KWV Niner Thursday. There were three players on 16 points, the count out determined Ian Crozier second and Braam Botes third.

Wednesdays IPS Jackpot entry produced unit value vouchers of R100 each.
The three sixes saw Siewert Wiid win the opening six on 17 points, Gary Hepburne claim the second six on 14 and Pieter Botes take the final six on 16.  Siewert Wiid also won the outward nine on 22 points with Pieter Botes and Bennie Claasen sharing the inward nine on 21 points each.     

This week the KGC offers the Leon’s House of Liquor IPS Wednesday followed by the Spur Junior Challenge and the KWV Niner Thursday. On Friday, by invitation, it is the annual Mercedes Benz Trophy. On Saturday it is the annual Mickey and Friends Golf Fundraiser.
