“No new toys for Christmas. Thank you.” Could well have been the thought this week of the 2013/14 and 15 Club Champion, Nico Jacobs. Hotter than the days he completed his last two rounds in eleven under par. His Boxing Day gross 66 (eight birdies and two dropped shots) fittingly produced a winning 42 individual stableford points. A bump at the final turn saw Nigel Page finish just a nose behind on 41 points. Three players returned 39 points – Ian Crozier, Alan Doherty and Adrian McLaren. Mclaren slipped into third place by virtue of the big nine in the count out.

On Christmas Eve Kevin Doherty posted a six pointer on the last hole to return 21 points and a win in the Thursday KWV Powerplay Niner. Gasson Williams was the runner up on 19 points on a count out. Daryll Alexander, who lost the count out, was third aided by a six pointer at the fifth. Outside of the prize winners Ant Crozier also recorded a big six and another entry into the Roodeberg and Rump draw. Although, he did admit, that his interest lay a little less towards the solid stuff.

Wednesday’s competition produced somewhat mixed results. 45 points was the top score in the betterball stableford. A count out deemed Bernie Bennett and Dave Jacobs first and Johnny Cloete and Deon Klopper second. In the IPS section the top score was 42 points. The count out placed Johnny Cloete first and Nico Jacobs second. Nico Jacobs matched the mid-morning heat as he scorched his way two a five under par gross 67,  that included five birdies, one eagle and two drops.

The winners in Tuesday’s Cleveland Golf sponsored Super Six Tournament were Christiaan Voight (14), Conrad Fortune (13) and Ramon Barlow (12).

Today, Monday, is the final Monday of the season in which the golf course is open for play. On Tuesday it is the Super Six Tournament. On Wednesday the KGC will host an IPS and on Thursday it is the KWV Powerplay Old Year Niner. The Sun Flamingo Niner will see in 2016 on Friday. Saturday sees the first Medal for the new year. All affiliated visitors are welcome to enter all the competitions.

Scorching, not only the weather, that was the golf on Saturday. The top players on the day, Christo Botma and Alan Doherty, carded a gross 69 and a gross 74 respectively. Both players returned 42 individual stableford points in which the count out deemed the latter first and the former second. The third and fourth placed players were just one point behind on 41 points each, Oban Cronje adjudged third and Neil Langley fourth. 

Eddie Barkhuizen, the only player on 20 points, enjoyed a clear win in the Friday Sun Flamingo Niner. Virgil Fredericks, Carlo Alexander and Fareez Alexander all followed on 19 points. The final prize went to Darian Fortune on 18 points.

It was a powerplay six pointer that ensured each of the winners a spot on the rostrum in the KWV Powerplay Niner last Thursday. Gerhard Buys returned a big six at the par three 11^th and an aggregate 21 points for first place. The runner up, Nico Ross, enjoyed a big six at the par four 15^th and an aggregate 20 points. Finally third placed Jaco Buys, made a big six at the par three 14^th and an aggregate 19 points.

Three players returned the top score, 39 individual stableford points, in the Darsha Insurance Brokers final 2015 Wednesday Competition. The count out deemed Siewert Wiid first, Gerhard Buys second and Christo Botma. Jaco Buys was fourth on 37 points with Kobus Strydom fifth on 36 points on a count out.

Allan Meyers claimed the Cleveland Golf Super Six Tournament on Tuesday evening.

This was on a count out from Peter Salo, each scored 14 points for the 6 holes. Garth Lee     

was third on 13 points.

This week sees the start of Monday play for December. On Tuesday it is the Cleveland Golf Super Six Tournament. On Wednesday, the Public Holiday, there will be a betterball stableford, with morning and afternoon times available. On Thursday it is the KWV Powerplay Niner. On Friday it is the Sun Flamingo Niner and the CTCS draw. On Saturday it is the annual Greenkeepers Revenge.

New SAGA rankings launch in 2016

4 December 2015 - The South African Golf Association (SAGA) has announced adjustments to the national amateur ranking system that should see players rewarded for consistency rather than frequency of play.

The tweaks to the ranking system will come into effect from 1 January 2016 and will bring South Africa’s amateur ranking system closer to the World Amateur Golf Ranking system.

Under the current ranking system, which calculates the players’ rankings from their best 20 results over the last 24 months, amateurs who participated in more tournaments have been at a distinct advantage.

The new system, which will take into account the 10 best scores over the previous 12 months, will reduce the pressure on players to play every event and places greater emphasis on a player’s consistency.

“The new system is a lot less volatile,” explained South African Golf Association president Gerhard Conradie.

“Reducing the minimum number of events will reward the players who play consistently well rather than those players who play more often.”

Eliminating the pressure to play more tournaments will not only help amateurs save on high travel costs, but will also reduce the risk of overplay, while producing a ranking that is more reflective of current form.

In another small but necessary change to the amateur ranking system, a pool of points will be assigned to each event based on the strength of the field and the prestige of the event. These points will be divided and allocated according to each player’s finishing position, similar to how prizemoney would be allocated in professional tournaments.

The Club 16 defending champion’s team, Yystergraad, held on to their title for the second successive year after the final round win in the Sunday morning singles in this annual Ryder Cup style challenge. 

Four players returned net 69 in Saturday’s Monthly Medal. The ensuing count out placed Allen Doherty best net overall, Alisdair McKenzie first in the A division, Frikkie Norman first in the B division and Kevin Wakeford runner up in the B division. A further count on net 70 saw Pieter Botes the runner up in the A division. Andries Kori returned the best gross on the day, a two under par 70.

Leon King and Chris Roux returned 44 points to win the Seniors BBS. A count out on 42 points placed Francois Maritz and John Lankester second, and, Japie Dreyer and Mike Vigne third.

Bernie Bennett posted 22 points on Friday evening to comfortably win the Sun Flamingo Niner. Jaco Janse (20), Susan Alexander (19), Leon van Wyk (18) and Fareez Aexander (17) finished second to fifth.

Nico Ross, aided by a birdie at the nominated par four 15^th for eight points, posted 23 points for an outright win in the Thursday KWV Powerplay Niner. Darian Fortune was second on 20 points wth Wedge Crozier third on 19 points, each having posted a powerplay six pointer. Outside of the prize winners Ant Crozier also claimed a ticket in the Roodeberg and Rump draw for his six pointer.

Lennie Allen claimed the Leon’s House of Liquor IPS Wednesday afternoon, his score 38 points. This was on a count out from Gavin Schafer. Gary Hepburn was third on 36 points. 

Wayne Petersen on 15 was first in the Cleveland Super Six Tournament on Tuesday. OJ Maimane was second on 13 with Darian Fortune third on the count out on 12.

This week it is the Tuesday Super Six, the final 2015 Wednesday Darsha IPS and the Thursday KWV Powerplay Niner. On Friday the it is the Sun Flamingo Niner and the CTCS snowball draw. On Saturday the Club offers an IPS.

That all the playing participants in the Sealing Solutions League remained for the final prize giving attested to the rivalry and the keenness engendered by the event as well as to the fact that the overall 2015 results hinged on the final days match scores right down to the last covey home.

Ultimately 12.5 points on the day saw Molinari’s crowned the 2015 Sealing Solutions A League Champions on an aggregate 72.5 points. A sterling 17.5 points on the day saw the Golf Shop move up to second place on 70.5 points. The Playas and the Happy Hookers were joint third on 59.5 points.

C-PAC was crowned the 2015 Sealing Solutions B League Champions on an aggregate 68.5 points. Kimberley Motoparts was second on 65 points and Pinseekers third on 56.5 points.

In the annual Ryder Cup Challenge played between Kimberley and Bloemfontein Saturday and Sunday the Kimberley team pipped the Bloemfontein team by a single point in the final match Sunday afternoon.

On Saturday 164 rounds were dedicated to the 2015 Husqvarna Kimberley Amateur Open. An IPS format over 36 holes the final results reflected the fast greens, some tight pin placings and a seeded draw with no single competitor outstripping the field. By championships end Johan Muller was adjudged the 2015 Champion on a count out on an aggregate 73 points (37/36) with Keith Brown the runner up on the same score, 73 points (39/34). Andries Kori, Danie Liebenberg and Neels Snyders were third through to fifth on 72 points. Donald Whitebooi was sixth alone on 71 points. Three players followed on 70 points, Marvin Torres, Neil Langley and William Orton.

In the strokeplay section Andries Kori again underlined the quality of his golf in carding a gross 71 for the opening round followed by a gross 69 for the closing round to finish on 140 for the day – four under par. Hermus Venter was second on 150.

In the Husqvarna Club competition, an IPS through 18 holes, Marius Stols, fresh from Henk Visser, posted the top score - 38 points. Charles Malherbe was second on 37 points with Pat Ansley third on 36 points on a count out.

Peter Mills on 21 points was a clear winner in the Friday Sun Flamingo Niner. Parks Mashaboa and Luchmen Poonawassy were second and third on 19 points each. Neville Alexander and Deuce Leburu were the final prize winners on 18 points each.

Johnny Higgs, who made a rear Friday visit, was rewarded an almost equally rear occurrence, a win in the CTCS snowball draw. It was valued at R1400.

OJ Maimane posted a six pointer at the 15^th to ensure a favourable count out on 20 points and a win in the Thursday KWV Powerplay Niner. Parks Mashobao, who lost that count out, was the runner after a six pointer on the final hole put him in the mix. Ivan Coetzee, sans any powerplay advantage, was third on 19 points on a count out.

Mali Manana, Machiel Cronje and Dave Benade all achieved a big six for a ticket in the Roodeberg and Rump draw.

Johan Herselman and Dalina Schoeman posted 45 betterball points to win the Halfway House Hotel sponsored Wednesday competition. Gavin Schafer and Adrian McLaren were the runners up on a count out from Barend Burger and Bennie Claasen, both betterballs on 42 points.     

Julius September set the record Tuesday with 17 points, one short of a full house, in the Super Six Tournament. Mali Manana and Duece Leburu were second and third, each on 14 points, in a four-way count out.

This week the KGC offers the Cleveland Golf Super Six Tournament Tuesday, the Leon’s IPS Wednesday, the KWV Powerplay Thursday and the Sun Flamingo Niner Friday. On Saturday it is the Monthly Medal, the Ladies Medal and Putting and the Seniors final outing for the year. It is Ryder Cup season with the annual Club 16 challenge Saturday and Sunday.

Frits van Dyk returned the top score on Saturday, 40 individual stableford points, to win the Adamantia High School Golf Fundraiser. Leon Blom was the runner up on 39 points.

Four players followed on 38 points – Kevin Collings, Nico Jacobs, Shane Arthur and John Callender-Easby.

Saturday also saw the final match in the 2015 Bob Klemp Shield, the Club Matchplay Championships, contested for by the top 16 players in the Strokeplay Championships. Defending champion Nico Jacobs enjoyed a comfortable five and four win against Stiaan Hugo. In doing so he set a KGC record by winning three consecutive strokeplay championships followed by three consecutive matchplay championships.

Friday’s events were cut short by lightning and rain, a total of 17mm measured.

On Thursday afternoon Cedric van der Ross posted 24 points for an outright win in KWV Powerplay Niner. A six pointer on the nominated par five 12^th assisted. A count out, that included an eight pointer on stroke one, saw Wade King the runner up on 21 points. Third placed Flexx Rantoa, on the same score, enjoyed a six pointer on the 13^th. Outside of the prize winners Mali Manana gained a ticket in the draw with a six pointer on the 14^th.

On Wednesday afternoon Bennie Claasen carded a gross 77 for 39 points and a win on the count out to take first place in the Darsha Insurance Brokers sponsored monthly competition. Losing that count out and the runner up was Garth Lee. Mike Vigne reversed a modest start with a one over par gross 37 on the home nine to post 38 points and to take third place.

The top three players in Tuesday’s Cleveland Golf sponsored Super Six Tournament were Garth Lee (15), Francois Schwartz (12) and Andre Thuysma (12).

The coming week the KGC offers the Cleveland Golf Super Six Tournament on Tuesday, the Halfway House Hotel BBS on Wednesday, the under 23 Spur Challenge and the KWV Powerplay Niner on Thursday and the Sun Flamingo Niner plus the CTCS draw on Friday. On Saturday it is the 2015 Husqvarna Kimberley Amateur Open played over 36 holes. The format is an IPS, the draw will be seeded by handicap. The entry fee of R250 includes the halfway house meal between 18’s. It will be followed by a braai and DJ Garth. On Sunday it is the final round of the 2015 Sealing Solutions League.

Kimberley Golf Club Report 12 November 2015

Molinaris 10, the Playas 9 - the results of a Sealings Solution League catch up game Sunday morning saw the former move towards the top of the log in the A league, with just one round to go.

Allen Grootboom returned a net 66 for 42 individual stableford points to win the Club Competition on Saturday. Ivan Coetzee was second on 40 points. A count out on 39 points placed Neil Langley third and Johan Oosthuizen fourth.

In the Saturday Senior outing Francois Maritz, playing the pivot, came first with Don Fielding on 46 betterball points and second with Daan Fourie on 42 points. Machiel Cronje and Pat Ansley were third on 41 points on the age count out. The outing included, too, the Ladies section and mixed betterballs in which the leading competitors were presented with the Cleopatra Trophy. It was Hannes Le Roux and Susan Ferreira who posted a winning 40 points.

Ivan Coetzee returned the top score, 20 points, in the Sun Flamingo Niner Friday afternoon. Shane Arthur was second on 19 points. Alan Meyer, Gavin Oliver and Bernie Turton were the final three prize winners, each on 18 points.

Thursday’s Petra Diamonds Golf Day, with a field of 160 golfers, brought a new dynamic to corporate occasions. The format, played from a scramble drive, was a fourball alliance with two scores to count. Ultimately it was Team Trentyre who was first on the day on 111 points. A count out on 107 points deemed Workwear Depot second and Finsch Diamond Mine third. Team Multotech Manufacturing was fourth on 105 points and Team Brinks Global was fifth on 104 points on a count out.

All historical KGC stableford records, individual and betterball, were shattered in the final round of the Konica Minolta Business League on Wednesday afternoon. The covey in which it all happened included OJ Maimane and Duece Leburu (Team OJM Consultants) and Tinus and Hermus Venter (Team KGC). And, it was Deuce Leburu who delivered the El Nino like devastation. Playing off a 15, and never having broken the 80 barrier, he unleashed a personal best 74 gross (36, 38) - a net 59 - for a sum total 49 individual stableford points. In the team event his partner OJ Maimane still managed to add an additional four points, a full return therefore, of 53 betterball points.

In the IPS for the day Deuce Leburu was first, with Kevin Collings second on 41 points and Barend Burger third on 39 points.

In the team event, the BBS, OJM Consultants were first with Burgers Brokers second on 45 points.

In the overall 2015 individual results OJ Maimane topped the table on 320 points, with Barend Burger second on 318 and Tinus Venter third on 317.

In the overall team results for 2015 OJM Consultants were the leading business on an aggregate 394 points, Burger Brokers second on 392 points, Darsha Insurance Brokers third on 382 points and the Halfway House Hotel fourth on 381 points.

Young Chante de Lange was crowned both the 2015 Northern Cape Ladies Open Champion and the Northern Cape Junior Champion after 36 holes at the Sishen Golf Club last Saturday, her gross score 156. Magdel du Toit (171) claimed the Silver Division, Magda van Jaarsveld (197) the Bronze Division and Mica Poonawassy (211) the Copper Division. The Best Net Overall was won by Magdel du Toit on 143 while the Junior Best Net Overall was won by Mica Poonawassy on 147. Northern Cape Prime Time (over 45 years) played over 18 holes was won by Linda Steenkamp.    

This week the KGC offers the Cleveland Golf Super Six Tournament on Tuesday, the Darsha Insurance Brokers IPS on Wednesday, the under 23 Spur Challenge and KWV Powerplay Niner on Thursday and finally the Sun Flamingo Niner and CTCS draw on Friday. On Saturday it is the Adamantia High School Golf Fundraiser.
