The Northern Cape
Provincial Mid-Amateur Golf Team (age 35 and over) was announced at the
weekend. Five Kimberley players were included – Deon Kruis, Andries Kori,
Steven Turner, Keith Brown and Frans Smith. Team Manager Ronnie Engelbrecht
will head the side. The venue for the tournament is a favourite traditional
links, East London Golf Course.
The near perfect
course conditions on offer at the KGC were underlined in a practice match
Sunday morning when leading player Stiaan Hugo carded a gross 67 that included
a remarkable 6 under par 30 on the back nine.
On Saturday Willem
Gerber finished three points ahead of the field for a comfortable competition
win. His 43 individual stableford points included 25 points on the outward nine
in which he returned a personal best gross 38. Trevor de Rueck was second on 40
points. Two players returned 39 points, Luchmen Poonawassy deemed third and
Braam Botes fourth. The final prize went to Shane Arthur on 38 points.
Saturday also saw the NC Senior Society outing. An age count
determined the winners - Tony Datnow and Don Fielding first, Theo Fourie and
Harry Welham the runners up. Pat Ansley and Mike Vigne were third on 42 points.
22 points was the
leading score in the Sun Flamingo Niner Friday. A count out saw Wikus Kok first
and Darian Fortune second. Darian Fortune, a leading young KGC Junior player,
posted his first ever sub 80 for the full round. Three players followed on 19
points, Neville Alexander, Andries Kori and Luchmen Poonawassy.
Braam Botes returned
20 points to win the KWV Niner on Thursday. Dave Benade was second and Ant
Crozier third.
Darsha Insurance
represented by Bertie Burger and Kevin Collings posted 46 betterball points to
win the Konica Minolta June 2015 outing on Wednesday. Mellins i Style represented
by Fires van Vuuren and Kassie Potgieter were the runners up on 45 points.
Independents Stef Burger and Harry Welham took the count for third place on 44
points thanks to an eagle three on the par five twelfth by the latter.
In the individual section
OJ Maimane posted a winning 41 individual stableford points after carding a
gross 75 that included a one under par 35 on the back nine. Christo Swanepoel
was second on 38 points. It was a full house at the prize giving table for the
Burger family when Barend represented third placed Gavin Schafer who returned
37 points.
This week the KGC
offers an IPS Tuesday, the Darsha Insurance Brokers IPS Wednesday afternoon,
the Spur Junior Challenge and KWV Niner Thursday and the Sun Flamingo Niner and
CTCS draw Friday. On Saturday it is the annual Sanlam Cancer Challenge.
On Sunday it is the
final round of the first half of the Sealing Solutions League. The format is
singles matchplay. In the second half the top three teams in the A League and
the top three teams in the B League will move forward to challenge for the 2015
A Section title, while remainder of will challenge for 2015 B Section title.
The Sun Flamingo Golf
Day, Friday 26th June, is a golf occasion to diarize. The R250 per
player entry fee includes R15 000 worth of prizes. A two ball with a
difference, mystery scoring, the combinations that count for each hole only
revealed after the game is complete and all the cards are handed in.
