Dries Mostert claimed
the opening round of the PennyPinchers Winter Meat Challenge Saturday
afternoon, his 40 individual stableford points just one ahead of the field. A
count out on 39 points had Ant Crozier second and Christo Botma third. Christo
Botma also posted the low round of the day - a gross 73. Johnny Cloete was
fourth, alone on 38 points. Peter Haddad and Conrad de Beer each returned 37
points for fifth and sixth position, with the final prizes going to Ivan
Coetzee and Harry Welham each on 36 points.
Over 100 players teed
up in the annual Sun Flamingo Golf Day, the hallmark of which is the varied
mystery scoring format used on each hole. The first real indication of the
results achieved only revealed at prize giving. Ultimately N and B du Plessis
returned 50.5 points to win the day. Joanie Herselman and Dalina Schoeman were
the runners up on 48.5 points, just .5 ahead of third placed Derek Dobson and
Willie Nieuwenhuizen. Bonolo Modise and Braam Botes were fourth on 47.5 points
with Neville Alexander and Jaco Janse fifth on 45 points.
It was the successful
use of the Powerplay option that separated the men from the boys in the KWV
Niner on Thursday. A six pointer each saw Braam Botes, OJ Mainane and Dave
Benade return 22, 19 and 17 respectively to take the prizes.
Andries Kori,
Kimberley’s favourite golfer, absolutely blew away the course late Wednesday
afternoon. He required just 59 shots to complete the first 17 holes. And then a
drive, a six iron and a two metre putt for eagle on the par five 18th
saw a fitting end to a flawless round as he signed off for a ten under par
gross 62. No drops, six birdies and two eagles saw him out in 30 and home in
32, the best amateur score at the KGC. Remarkably his partner OJ Mainane was
able to add a further four points to their betterball score, a winning 50
points in the Annabell’s sponsored monthly competition.
Junior golfer Darian
Fortune, who posted his first sub 80 round last week, returned another personal
best – a gross 77. He and his partner, Danie Liebenberg, returned 48 betterball
points to take second spot.
Kassie Potgieter and
Harry Welham were third on 47 betterball points.
This week the KGC
offers Tuesday’s SUPER SIX GOLF sponsored by the Golf Shop. On Wednesday it is
the Leons House of Liquor IPS. On Thursday it is the Spur Junior Challenge and
the KWV Niner with the POWERPLAY option. On Friday it is the Sun Flamingo Niner
along with the CTCS snowball draw. Saturday sees the July Rhodes Medal.
