Weekly Newsletter 8 October 2014 - 12 October 2014

Saturday’s galeforce winds accompanied by a midafternoon hail storm did little to dent the scores of the leading players in the St. Andrews Presbyerian Church Golf Day. Top of the list for the day was Dickey Thomas on 42 individual stableford points. Ronnie Engelbrecht was second on 39 points. A three-way tie on 38 points saw Kabelo Luburu third, Hannes Herselman fourth and Neil Langley fifth. Driaan van Niekerk was sixth on 37 points.

On Friday the NG Kerk Kimberley held their annual golf fundraiser, the format a betterball stableford played from a scramble drive. The winners, Rudi Dexter and Donavon Jennings, with or without divine intervention set this season’s record - 57 betterball points. Hennie Bezhuidenhout and JJ Hanekom were second on 53 points. Pieter and Deon van Niekerk were third on 52 points. Four coveys followed on 51 points. Leading that count were Oppel Myburgh and Dalina Schoeman in fourth position and Siewert Wiid and Dries du Plessis in fifth position.

On Friday evening Dickey Thomas first signaled his intention for Saturday’s win by posting 22 points in the Flamingo Casino Meat and Slots Niner. No count out was required. Deuce Leburu, Andries Kori, Tracey Stanley and Bobo Mentor were the remaining prize winners.

Andries Kori claimed the Thursday KWV Niner on 18 points. Dave Benade and Willy Uys were second and third on 17 and 16 points respectively.

Thursday also saw the final round of the 18 hole Spur Junior Challenge. After three rounds it was Danie Liebenberg who received the IPS shield and Darian Fortune who received the strokeplay shield.

Monday through to Wednesday the Northern Cape Junior Provincial Golf Team competed for the very first time. The eight selected players were NJ van der Walt (Hartswater Golf Club), Leon van Jaarsveld (Sishen Glf Club), Darius Kruger (Upington Golf Club) and Keenan Aysen, Dean Schonegevel, Hermus Venter, Christiaan Voight and Joshua Edwards all from the KGC.
The event was the inter- provincial heptangular played on the Kingswood Golf Estate over three days. A matchplay event it included foursomes in the morning followed by singles in the afternoon.
On the opening day the NC played Western Province and Eastern Province. They lost to an always strong Western Province side, but, gave a good account of themselves against EP winning 7/5.
On day two they played tournament favourites Boland and the host side Southern Cape and although they lost both matches they put up a determined showing.
On the final day they played Free Sate and Border, requiring a win against the latter to finish alone in fifth position. A titanic battle ensued in which they lost three games on the final hole to lose out 7/5 and ultimately share of fifth position.
Boland were the tournament winners with Western Province the runners up.

Kat Swanepoel was the feature player in Wednesday’s Konica Minolta Business League outing. He together with his partner Jaco Buys returned an unmatched 48 betterball points in difficult gusty conditions. His individual 41 points was also the top score in the individual section of the tournament. JJ Hanekom was the runner up on 39 points with Lionel Jacobs third on 38 points. A four-way count out on 37 points saw Peet Smith fourth on the day.

The Kimberley Ladies Golf League Team played their final match for the year on Sunday 21 September. Helena Janse, Susan Alexander, Jacky Schoeman and Norma Potgieter were the KGC representatives. Two wins and two losses signaled a draw, but, was enough to see them win the South West Zone and take them through to the FS and NC finals to be played at Schoeman Park.
There they will take on the winners of the Central and East Zones.

Meanwhile the Bloemfontein Golf Club has extended an invitation to the KGC Ladies to participate in the Rose Festival on Sunday 19th October. It is a prominent event with much to offer the players.

This week the KGC will host the Darsha Insurance Brokers IPS on Wednesday and the Spur Junior Challenge and KWV Niner on Thursday. On Friday it is the annual corporate Vodacom Golf Day, a

highlight on the KGC calendar. On Saturday it is the Kimberley Girls High School Golf Day as well as the Seniors October outing.
