A missed putt for
eagle – so, so, close - on the final hole saw Andries van Zyl concede the
chance to force a playoff and confirmed Bloemfontein’s Therion Nel the 2016
Mellins i Style Northern Cape Open Champion. Nel completed the three rounds on
a five under par aggregate 211 (70, 72, 69). Andries van Zyl was second on 212
((71, 71, 70) with defending champion Josef Fourie third on on 213 (72, 72,
69).
The leading NC
players were KGC’s Andries Kori on 217 (68, 77, 72), his score marred by a
disappointing second round, Sishen Golf Club’s Alan Toy on 220 (73, 76, 71) and
KGC’s Dean Schoenegevel on 221 (77, 70, 74).
The leading
players in the NC Senior section were Stan de Beer 221 (71, 78, 72), Nico Ross
231 (73, 77, 81), Keith Brown 234 (80, 75, 79) and Conrad de Beer 234 (80, 78,
76) – all of the KGC.
The best of the NC
Juniors were Gordey Fatkulin on 223 (75, 75, 73) and NJ van van der Walt 227
(74, 73, 80), both from Hartswater, and KGC’s Joshua Edwards on 230 (77, 77,
76). Within that section the round of day, Sunday, belonged to young Danie
Liebenberg. Despite a four over par eight at the 16th hole he
returned a personal best 74 gross, two under for the remaining 17 holes, a
stretch that included five birdies.
It was of course
the final opportunity to gain selection for the Senior IPT Northern Cape
provincial team announced afterwards as follows – Seniors: Stan de Beer, Anton
Boyce, AP Botes, Frans Smith, Conrad de Beer, Keith Brown, Nico Ross and Hennie
Bezuidenhout - Super Seniors: Machiel Cronje, Eddie Barkhuizen, Faan Rheeder
and Ernst Swart.
A count out on 21
points placed Helena Janse first and Bernie Bennett second in the Friday Sun
Flamingo Niner. Allan Meyers was third, alone on 20 points. Francois Schwartz
(19) and Ricardo Joseph (18) were the final prize winners.
Ant Crozier relied
on steady golf, sans a big six, to take the KWV Powerplay Niner on Thursday
evening. Dave Wilson and Neville Alexander were second and third respectively,
each on 19 points and each through the aid of a big six. Wedge Crozier and
Ronnie Engelbrecht, also, each posted a big six to gain a ticket to the
Roodeberg and Rump draw.
Barend Burger was
again first up at the prize giving table on Wednesday. As proxy on this
occasion for Bertie Burger who returned 39 individual stableford points to win
the Darsha Insurance Brokers IPS. Harry Welham was the runner up on 38 points
with OJ Maimane third on 36 points.
Alan Meyers
enjoyed an outright win in the Tuesday Cleveland sponsored Super Six
Tournament, his score 14 points. Peter Salo and Hein Voigt were second and
third, each on 12 points.
This week the KGC
offers the Super Six on Tuesday, the Horseshoe Inn BBS on Wednesday and the
Under 23 Spur Challenge and KWV Powerplay Niner on Thursday. On Friday it is
the Sun Flamingo Niner followed by the CTCS draw valued at R1500. At the
weekend it is an IPS Saturday and the first round of the Sealing Solutions League,
the format singles matchplay.

The Constitution states that “The annual
subscription shall become payable on
the first day of January in each and every year”.
The extension to 31 March, as has become common to
many Members, was a Committee concession only.
That concession has been reviewed in lieu of the
fact that
both
the Affiliation fees and the HNA fees are payable by the end of February.
