76 fathers and sons joined forces to take up the challenge in the 2014
PA Walter Africa Kimberley Father and Son Tournament over the weekend. After
two days and two rounds it was Willy and George Wiid who were finally crowned
the winners having pipped the field by a single point after returning an
aggregate 90 points (44/46) for the 36 holes. As the winners they were also
crowned the 2014 Africa Father and Son Champions with an invitation to take
part in the 2014 Australian Father and Son Championships in Launceston,
Tasmania at the end of November. A three round event it is played over the
Launceston Golf Club, the Riverside Golf Club and the Country Club Tasmania.
The first players to arrive this week were in fact Tasmanian’s Terry
and Sam Smith the current Australian Father and Son Champions. Their home club,
Launceston Golf Club established in 1899, is Tasmania's oldest 18 hole golf
course. It is regarded as the toughest championship layout in Northern
Tasmania. Its signature hole the 159 meter par 3 thirteenth has a strong South
African connotation, it is known as “Spion Kop”.
Sunday’s 2014 runners up were Johan Herselman and Donathon Jennings on
89 points. They were followed by Neels and Divan Snyders on 87, Gerhard and
Reynard Fourie (Pretoria) on 86 and Tinus and Hermus Venter on 75. Hermus
Venter fired a personal best two under 70 gross in the final round.
Saturday’s IPS club competition saw Kevin Wakeford the winner on 40
points. Dickie Thomas was second on 39 points, Dave Benade third on 38 points
with Frans Smith the final prize winner on 38 points.
On 22 points Susan Alexander enjoyed an outright win in Friday’s
Flamingo Casino Meat and Slots Niner. Deuce Leburu was second on 21 points in a
count out from OJ Maimane. Jaco Janse and Fareez Alexander were the final prize
winners, each on 18 points.
Danilo Scholtz claimed the annual APK Die Kruis Golf Fundraiser on
Friday afternoon after posting 39 individual stableford points in a round of
complete contrasts, the first nine just 11 points, the second nine a remarkable
28 points. Norman Cook was second on 38 points with Danilo Scholtz junior third
on 37 points.
With two four pointers in the last three holes Wedge Crozier surged
ahead to post 21 points and a convincing win the KWV Diamond Niner on Thursday
evening. Willie Uys was second on 18 points with Ant Crozier third on 17
points.
Hermus Venter claimed the double in the Thursday Spur Junior Challenge,
returning a level par gross 36 and 20 individual stableford points.
Barend Burger and Pierre Wasserman returned 46
betterball stableford points to win Wednesday’s Annabell’s Restaurant sponsored
competition. Gavin van Zyl and Kevin Collings were the runners up on 45 points
with Gary Hepburn and Rudi Besselaar third on 44 points.
This week the KGC offers the Leon’s IPS Wednesday, the Spur and KWV
Niners on Thursday, the Flamingo Casino Niner and CTCS draw on Friday and the
Adamantia School sponsored Rhodes Medal on Saturday. It is also the Seniors
outing on Saturday.
